Psychophysiological aspects of “hybrid warfare” progression

Abstract

Introduction. The study of the impact of the events of the "hybrid warfare" on the efficiency and reliability of servicemen, their functional state, as well as the negative effects of stressors directly during their participation in combat operations are currently insufficiently studied. An important unexplored factor that strongly influences the psychological state of the fighters is the background (context), which is due to the negative events taking place in the country. These events are associated with increased activation of the population, which is self-sustaining processes that are formed in this environment. Therefore, the relevance of in-depth analysis of psychophysiological mechanisms of origin and further progress of the effects of "hybrid warfare" is unquestionable and it has great importance for maintaining high defense capabilities of the country.

The purpose. Identification of some psychophysiological mechanisms of formation and maintenance of "hybrid warfare" existence  and substantiation of its advantages for the enemy over the means of "hot war".

Materials and methods. Using the methods of systematic, bibliosemantic and retrospective analysis, scientific publications on the identification of some psychophysiological mechanisms of formation and maintenance of the existence of "hybrid warfare" and substantiation of its advantages for the enemy over the means of "hot war" were studied. To do this, a search was made for available sources of information from 1982 to 2020, which related to the purpose of the work. Various psychophysiological mechanisms of formation and maintenance of existence of "hybrid warfare" have been studied. Based on a thoughtful analysis of modern sources of information, the various mechanisms for forming and maintaining the existence of a "hybrid warfare" have been summarized for developing measures to reduce their harmful effects on this basis.

Results. Some psychophysiological mechanisms of formation and maintenance of existence of "hybrid warfare" and substantiation of its advantages for the enemy by means of "hot war" have been revealed. The conditions of functioning of psychophysiological and psychological mechanisms that contribute to the emergence and spread of autowave processes in the state, which characterize the course of "hybrid warfare", have been outlined. Such problematic areas as: self-organization of the people mass activity - "virtual crowd"; mechanisms for organizing a "hybrid warfare"; models of synchronization of activity in large masses of people have been critically analyzed. The attention has been drawn to the need for further study of psychophysiological mechanisms of occurrence and maintenance of "hybrid warfare" and the development on this basis of measures to reduce their harmful effects.

Conclusions. The conditions of functioning of psychophysiological and psychological mechanisms that contribute to the emergence and spread of autowave processes in Ukraine, which characterize the course of the "hybrid warfare" have been formulated. It is established that the organization of a "hybrid warfare" can be described in terms of the functioning of the "virtual crowd". It is shown that the main advantage of "hybrid warfare" is the wide coverage of the population and servicemen with harmful emotional processes, which lead to the combat effectiveness decreasing and the chaos of public sentiment. It is established that information and cyber measures, terrorism, sabotage, guerrilla action, etc. are only techniques that allow to drive and maintain the auto-wave processes in the "virtual crowd" at the appropriate level, covering a wide range of people and the military. The usage of such techniques leads to achieve interests in the rapid and slight  enemy's human casualties, as well as drastically reduces the cost of warfare.
